What age range should school playground equipment cover?
Playground equipment is designed and safety-rated by age group under CSA Z614, the Canadian playground safety standard. The standard covers public-use equipment for children aged 18 months to 12 years, and splits its requirements into two age groupings: 18 months to 5 years and 5 to 12 years. The overlap at age five is deliberate, because the standard treats a child’s sixth year as a transitional one.
For a typical K-7 school, that means a main structure in the 5 to 12 grouping with graduated challenge (lower platforms and easier climbers on one side, taller decks and more demanding elements on the other), plus a separate primary-age zone where space and budget allow. What to avoid: equipment that only challenges the oldest kids, so the younger half stands in line, or equipment that only suits the youngest, so the older half climbs on the outside of it, which is precisely the behaviour the age groupings exist to prevent.
How big should the playground be?
Plan around your realistic recess headcount, not your enrolment. If 60 kids share the playground at peak recess, the equipment needs enough simultaneous play events (slides, climbers, spinners, swings) that children play instead of queue. The right ratio depends on your schedule and yard, so it’s worth walking through with a designer rather than applying a rule of thumb: a school with staggered recesses needs very different capacity from one that sends everyone out at once.
Remember that capacity drives more than the structure price. Taller and larger equipment means bigger CSA-required fall zones, which means more safety surfacing, usually the second-largest line in the budget. Size the equipment and surfacing together. What does “inclusive” actually mean, VS “accessible”
Accessible means a child using a mobility device can physically reach the playground. Inclusive means the playground is designed so children of all abilities, physical, sensory, and cognitive, can genuinely play together, not just watch from the ramp. For equipment selection, inclusive design means:
- Ground-level play events (panels, spinners, sensory elements) alongside elevated ones, so play happens where everyone can reach it
- Varied challenge, so the same structure works for different bodies and confidence levels
- Sensory-rich elements such as music, texture, and movement, that engage children who experience the world differently
- Unitary surfacing such as poured-in-place (PIP) rubber, because no equipment is inclusive if a wheelchair can’t cross the wood chips to reach it

What should school equipment be made of?
School playgrounds take more abuse than any other category: hundreds of children, twice a day, in BC weather, for decades. Look for galvanized and powder-coated steel structures, UV-stabilized plastics, tamper-resistant hardware, and, non-negotiably, CSA Z614 compliance from the manufacturer. Why manufacturing origin matters more in 2026
That last question used to be trivia. It isn’t anymore. US-manufactured equipment carries tariff exposure and exchange-rate risk between quote and delivery, and on a six-figure equipment order, currency movement alone can eat a PAC’s entire contingency. Canadian-made equipment means stable pricing in Canadian dollars, shorter freight, and faster access to replacement parts for the next twenty years. - Form a small committee and agree on priorities (ages, capacity, inclusion, must-haves).
